Winter blizzards bring challenges for EMS services

The weather outside has been frightful, but while snowy roads may cause scheduling headaches for some, for others they can really be a matter of life and death.
For the EMS department at Franklin General Hospital, winter storms provide a real challenge for ambulance crews as they try to keep themselves safe while attending to medical emergencies.
"The bad weather kind of makes things a little bit interesting," said Nancy Retz, interim manager of the EMS Department at Franklin General Hospital.
While the increased activity during the summer can result in busy times for ambulance crews, winter poses challenges of its own. Outside ice can cause injuries while staying indoors increases your chances of catching a serious illness.
