Wilson nabs mayor's seat in Sheffield

Nick Wilson outpaced his closest competition by 116 votes during Tuesday's Sheffield city election and won the three-way contest to earn him the mayor's office.

"I just heard the results, and I thought, 'Oh geez!' " said Wilson Tuesday night. "Yeah, I'm kind of surprised."

Wilson won with 215 total votes and finished ahead of candidates Sheri Bogue, 99, Dennis Kingery, 25.

Wilson currently serves on the Sheffield City Council and will finish out his term before he takes over the mayor's chair in January, which is being vacated by outgoing mayor Jim Saylor. He said his plans include improving communication between city officials and citizens, and also hopes to improve portions of Sheffield's infrastructure.

"I want to open up communication, because it's been somewhat lacking and it needs to be better," he said. "I also plan on looking for more money – things like grants – so we can look at making improvements here."

Two council seats were up for grabs on Tuesday's ballot as well. Mike McKee won one spot with 164 votes while candidate JC McCaslin won the other with 161 votes. Write-in candidates Sean Cameron, 96, Karl Sorenson, 71, and James Hagarty, 62, were the next three vote-getters, and candidate Shirley Meints finished last with 43 votes.
