West Fork softball out to fast start

SHEFFIELD — West Fork scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning Thursday on its way to a 2-1 victory over Iowa-Falls Alden, highlighting a strong first week of the season.

The Warhawks went 4-0 on the week, including 2-0 in the Top of Iowa Conference West Division, also scoring victories over Clear Lake, 2-1, Rockford, 12-0 and Northwood-Kensett, 12-0.

West Fork took a 2-0 lead over Clear Lake in the fourth inning before the Lions answered with their only run in the fifth. Libby Trewin struck out 10 and did not walk a batter while holding Clear Lake to four hits. JoAnna Wallace led West Fork’s four-hit attach with a pair of singles. Keelee Sheriff and Breea Weaver also had hits for the Warhawks.

Trewin threw a five-inning no-hitter Wednesday as the Warhawks topped Rockford 12-0. The Warhawks put their first run on the scoreboard in the third inning and added six in the fourth and five in the fifth. Preslee Dickman went 3-for-4 with a double  to lead the offense. Breckyn Dickman also had a double while Wallace, Trewin and Sheriff also had hits. 

Thursday’s game against Iowa Falls-Alden was tied 1-1 after five innings before the Warhawks put the winning run across in the sixth inning. Trewin scattered three hits and struck out nine to pick up the victory. The Warhawks had just three hits in the game, singles by Wallace, Trewin and B. Dickman.

West Fork needed just three innings to down Northwood-Kensett by the 12-run rule Friday, 12-0. Trewin and Brooke Rother combined on a no-hitter, striking out five. Rother also had a pair of doubles among her three hits to lead the offense. P. Dickman, B. Dickman and Sheriff had a pair of hits each while Wallace and Trewin slugged triples.

Things get more difficult for the Warhawks this week. They played at undefeated and No. 11-ranked (Class 1A) Newman Catholic Tuesday and host undefeated No. 3-ranked (Class 2A) Central Springs Wednesday. Clarion-Goldfield-Dows visits Sheffield Thursday before the Warhawks play at Saint Ansgar Friday.
