West Fork shows no sign of let-up in 90-16 win over Vikings

SHEFFIELD – After a 30-0 end of the first quarter, West Fork didn’t show any sign of letting its foot off of the brake in an eventual 90-16 win over Northwood-Kensett on Tuesday, Dec. 8.
Coach Frank Schnoes’ team had all 11 of its players reach the scorebook and didn’t allow the Vikings’ first points until a basket with six minutes, three seconds left in the second quarter.
“We shot the ball really well,” Schnoes said, “and I thought as the game was out of hand our kids still played with intensity and took care of the basketball, didn’t allow it to be a sloppy game. I know they are struggling right now, but we had some things we needed to work on.
“All the kids came in and contributed. It’s always fun when everyone gets to run the floor and contribute. I was happy to see that.”
Kayden Ames was 7-of-9 from beyond the three-point line on the way to a game-high 27 points and Cail Weaver helped turn nine steals into 15 points on easy lay-ups while Jakob Washington tallied 12 more points and led the team with six rebounds in the rout.
The team as a whole shot 61 percent from the field (36-of-59) and 50 percent from beyond the arc (13-of-26).
Ren Heimer led the Warhawks with six assists and got three blocks apiece from Edison Caspers, Jason Meier and Joe Ingham from off the bench.
All of this despite the fact that official practices had to go on pause when West Fork went all online for 10 days.
Schnoes said his team has persevered and out to a 2-0 start, 2-0 in the Top of Iowa East Conference.
“One of them missed all of the pre-season practices because he was quarantined for 14 days, so he’d only been back for a few days when we went all online, we’d had a week of practice when we had to shut down for 10,” Schnoes said. “On the 28th (of November) we had to start all over again.
“Some of them were shooting on their own in the Wellness Center, it wasn’t like they didn’t touch a basketball, but it isn’t the same as practice, not working on specific things I would have coached them. But they did an OK job of getting ready for the season.”
