Autumn Stonecyphyer finishing match with a pin to claim her spot at the girl's state tournament.
The West Fork Warhawk girl wrestlers were invited down to Hampton to compete in the NCC Girls Invitational. The team took full advantage of the opportunity to compete in the NCC against the four teams that have girls wrestling. The Warhawks would enter nine wrestlers into the field and walk away with four NCC girls champions. At 110 pounds, H-D-CAL student Teaghan Bird would claim an NCC title. She would go 4-0 with four pins in her lone opportunity to wrestle in her home gym. At 115 pounds, Ava Gauley would go 0-4 and take home fifth place. Preslee Dickman would compete at 120 pounds and take home 2nd place going 2-1 on the evening. The second champion for the Warhawks would be at 125 pounds as senior Autumn Stonecypher would go 2-0 with 2 pins to claim the title. In the 145 pound weight bracket Jenny Ramirez would finish the night 1-1 and finish as the runner-up. Joslyn Bordwell would claim the 155 poud title going 2-0 with 2 pins. The other H-D-CAL student, senior Gina Schmit would finish as the runner up in the 170 weight class. Schmit would have 2 pins and win a match by a 4-2 decision. At 190 pounds the Warhawks would claim their final champion, Fernanda Ramirez, with both of her wins coming by fall.
Friday would see the Warhawk wrestlers head to Decorah for the first ever girls regional qualifier. The Warhawks would have nine wrestlers entered again to compete for a chance to wrestle at the first ever sanctioned girls state wrestling tournament. Teaghan Bird would compete at 110 pounds for the Warhawks and would come up just short of qualifying for state, finishing in fifth place. Preslee Dickman would follow suit at 120 pounds, falling just short of qualifying for the state tournament with a fifth place finish. Both girls would win their final match of the season, but would not get a chance to wrestle back for true fourth. Stonecypher would be the first ever Warhawk girls wrestler to qualify for the girls state tournament by placing 4th place at 125 pounds. At 130 and 140 pounds neither Warhawk wrestler would qualify for the state tournament. Dorenkamp would go 0-2 and Burgin would finish her day 2-2. Jenny Ramirez, 145 pounds, would fall one match short of qualifying for the state tournament finishing in 5th place. At 155 pounds, the Warhawks would get their second qualifier with Joslyn Bordwell finishing 3rd place. At 170 and 190 pounds, the Warhawks would be close, but not able to punch their tickets to the state tournament. Fernanda Ramirez would finish 5th and Harmoney Fessler would finish 6th. As a team the Warhawks would finish 6th overall with 120 points. A good conclusion for the first year of Warhawk girls wrestling.
Stonecypher and Bordwell will compete at the IGHSAU state tournament Thursday and Friday at Xtreme Arena in Coralville. The first session of the tournament starts at 9:00 AM. The full schedule of events is listed on the IGHSAU website. Best of luck to the Warhawk wrestlers and coaches on their quest gold.
