Mitch Vanness’ priorities in life didn’t include visiting Haiti with his daughter Madi, 17 — yet on March 9, 2017, he found himself air-bound to the island nation. It wasn’t for a vacation or a tour, or a field trip; the two were traveling with the sole purpose of volunteering and community service.
The Vannesses are one of several individuals and families in the county to partner with GoServ Global, a non-denominational, faith-based international community development organization, rooted in empowering and aiding the communities of the world. For the Vannesses, the task was aiding in the construction of Sukup Safe T Homes, planting corn and volunteering at the area orphanages.
“I’ve never really done nothing like this I tell people,” Mitch Vanness said. “It wasn’t really on my to-do list, but I did it and I enjoyed it.”

The group of friends had been attending meetings, at the same time that several spots remained. From familial discussions about a possible excursion to Haiti, Mitch Vanness decided to tag along.
