Unexpected wind gusts battered Hampton area

High winds on Saturday morning wreaked havoc throughout Hampton as uprooted trees took down power lines. A tree uprooted in the 100 block of Eighth St. SE bent a power pole and pulled power lines to the ground. RYAN HARVEY/ HAMPTON CHRONICLE

The Franklin County area was bombarded with sudden gusts of wind last Saturday morning that reached a peak of 80 to 90 mph, according to Director of Emergency Management Services Thomas Craighton.

The incredible wind speeds were first reported by the airport, and Craighton noted that the whole community was shocked by the force of the gales—and by how quickly the windstorm passed.

“It was there and then it wasn’t,” said Craighton, “but it left some damage behind.”
