House focused on increasing skilled workforce

The recent unseasonably chilly weather makes it feel more like harvest season than mid-July in Iowa! While I must admit it has been a refreshing break from the usual scorching heat and humidity, warmer temperatures appear to be on the horizon – just in time for RAGBRAI!

This year’s route takes the bicyclists through Ventura and Clear Lake, and I have no doubt everyone will feel thoroughly welcomed and entertained by these great communities. Thanks to all who have put in so much time and energy preparing for this one-of-a-kind, quintessential Iowa event.

As I travel throughout the state during the legislative interim, I continue to hear concerns from employers about a lack of skilled workers and a workforce shortage in our state.  In fact, according to a recent new ranking by CNBC, Iowa’s low cost of living and competitive regulatory environment make us the 12th best state in the nation for business. Iowa has a great workforce with a great work ethic, but to become one of the top states in the nation we need to develop the right skills.

The ranking scores states on 10 broad categories, the most heavily weighted of which are business costs, the state economy, infrastructure, workforce, and quality of life. Iowa did well on the cost of doing business in our state, business friendliness, the overall economy, quality of life, and cost of living. We placed average in infrastructure, but scored 37th in workforce.

In response to this growing concern, over the past couple of years, the Legislature has committed to making an investment to help Iowans get back to work and meet the increased demands of the workplace.

As a result of this past session, we will provide $3 million to Iowa’s community colleges for job training efforts through the Skilled Worker Initiative that was developed in 2013. We will also provide $2.75 million to improve upon and expand access to apprenticeship opportunities in Iowa. These initiatives are helping to ensure Iowans are getting the job training they need in order to access good careers, as well as provide assurance to existing businesses or those interested in coming to Iowa, that a well-trained workforce is ready to meet their needs.

I hope you have the opportunity to take a break and enjoy some of Iowa’s beautiful lakes, rivers, parks, and fairs this year. Nothing beats summer in Iowa!
