FORT DODGE – When the 2014 West Fork boys cross country season started, head coach Mark Twedt told a story at the welcome home pep rally of how he accidentally lodged a chisel into his thigh just before practice was to start.

He used tissue paper and duct tape to try to stanch the bleeding as he ran the practice, but it was too much. By the time practice was over, his team was concerned for his health and the duct tape wouldn’t hold, leaving splatters of blood everywhere.

But the practice went on.

Through the blood and sweat, his son Peyton Twedt won a sprint to the finish against Turkey Valley’s Ryan Izer for the Class 1A individual title.
