Three second-half goals lift GHV over Bulldogs

HAMPTON – Garner-Hayfield-Ventura broke open what was a close 2-1 boys soccer match at halftime to take a 5-1 win over Hampton-Dumont/CAL on Thursday, April 22.

What appeared to be a frantic pace to start, both teams opened with penalty kicks against each other in the first 5 minutes, 32 seconds of the match.

However, it was all Cardinals after that.

Isaac Knutson scored on a scramble to untie the game with 14:22 left until halftime where it remained at the break. After that, the Cardinals were able to score in a myriad of ways, all by Kevin Meyers to record a hat trick, against sophomore goalkeeper David Vazquez, who made a number of diving saves against GHV, which improved to 4-4 overall. The Bulldogs dropped to 1-2 overall after defeating the Cardinals in the opener, 3-1.

Meyers also assisted on Knutson’s goal.

The first second-half goal came after a free kick on a rebound at 48:13, the second Meyers scored directly on a throw-in at 54:38 and then he completed the hat trick with a cornerkick at 66:57.

Unofficially scoring on the penalty kick for coach Danielle Araña’s team was Alex Hernandez at 5:32. An official tally for Vazquez’s saves were unavailable by press time.
