A splash of color to downtown Hampton’s streetlights serves as a sobering reminder of those that suffer from sexual abuse.
For Sexual Assault Awareness Month, Crisis Intervention Services representatives placed teal ribbons on 20 streetlights in downtown. Along with the ribbons are informational cards that include statistics on sexual assaults.
Amanda Simons, Domestic Abuse Advocate with Crisis Intervention Service, said that the month and the ribbons show that sexual assault is a very real problem in all communities, not just ones with larger populations.
“This brings attention to the small towns and that the statics show it does happen here,” she said.
