For South Side Elementary students, getting fit and men-tally prepared for the day is a step-by-step process – literal-ly.
This year marks the sixth year South Side has offered the morning walking club for students. Before school be-gins for the day, students can take laps around the concrete trail right by the school.
“When you exercise, it awakens your brain,” said school counselor Sheryl Borcherding. “We noticed that first hour of the day was a lot more productive with the kids that walked.”
Students who choose to walk are given a card and each time around the path, the card is punched. Borcherding said a filled punch card equals five miles. On the first five miles, students are a given a dog tag with a chain with their name on the back of it. Every five miles after that, students re-ceive a little rubber shoe to put on the chain to keep track of their total distance. Shoes are passed out at the end of the week, which Borcherding affectionately refers to as “Foot Fridays.”
