Preserving the prairie one flowerbed at a time

A glowing wooden apparatus illuminates a dark corner inside a shed at Franklin County Conservation’s headquarters in Hampton. Its rigid frame is covered by a plastic tarp, shielding the contents from chilly temperatures lurking outside.
     “Last year they tried to grow some in here, but a lot of the plants died,” said Ned Parker as he pealed back the plastic on the mini greenhouse. “This is the first successful year. Well, hopefully successful year. They’re not in the ground yet.”
     The greenhouse is part of a new project that will add more native beauty to Franklin County’s recreation parks. The plants will be transported to flowerboxes at Maynes Grove Lodge in April, where they’ll get established and eventually produce flowers throughout the growing season.
