Police investigating substance found at North Side

The Hampton Police Department is working to identify a suspicious substance found at the North Side Elementary playground Sunday.
Hampton Police Chief Bob Schaefer said the crystal-like substance was found in a wallet that had been dropped on the school grounds. He said the substance has been sent to the lab for testing to determine what it is.
A Facebook post circulating Sunday warned that the substance was laced with Fentanyl, which can be deadly. Schaefer said that report is inaccurate and the substance won’t be known until tests are complete.
He added that he does not believe children were exposed to the substance, as it was in a closed wallet.
He did say, however, that people who find mysterious substances need to be careful and contact authoirities immediately.
“Take safety precautions,” he said. “If you see anything out of the ordinary, call us.”
