Joe Pitsor was recently selected to receive the 2017 Iowa Farm Environmental Leader Award. Pitsor has been farming for 81 years. His operation consists of 612 total acres including 310 acres of cropland, 175 acres of CRP and 127 acres used for pasture and wildlife.
“The cropland acres are farmed with a corn-soybean rotation, using a no-till cropping system. Some of the cropland has been no-tilled for 20 years. Joe does an excellent job of managing soil fertility with extensive soil sampling and variable rate technology used for application of P & K fertilizer,” said Jerry Neppel, Environmental Specialist at Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. “Nitrogen management consists of split nitrogen applications, with 50 percent of the nitrogen applied preplant with nitrification inhibitors and the other 50 percent sidedressed. Herbicide applications are made using a sprayer with low drift nozzles.”
Approximately 97 acres of the cropland is farmed on the contour with the use of 3,800 feet of field border. Old gravel pits on the farm are maintained for recreational and wildlife use.
