HAMPTON – In a first-ever meeting between the Bulldogs and Grand View Christian, the Class 1A No. 13 home team put this one away early.
Avery Hanson scored 18 points and Courtney Miller added 12 while Briana Grover scored 10 as coach Miranda Valley’s team posted a 63-30 win over the Thunder despite a less than inspired performance.
“We didn’t know much about them, they didn’t know much about us,” Valley said. “You look at records and scores, and that’s all you know. To come out with a win is a win.”
“We were sloppy and we have to do things better coming up in our next week to two weeks, I think we can switch that switch to where they know they can’t play like that against certain teams – that we have to be stronger with the ball. They’ll be ready to go just because they love playing and they’ll compete.”
Leading 31-13 at halftime, the Bulldogs came out of the break to outscore the visitors 13-4 in the first five minutes.
The younger sister of Grant DeMeulenaere who helped lead the Thunder boys to the first of back-to-back state titles in Class 1A, freshman Kelly DeMeulenaere led Grand View Christian with 11 points against the Bulldogs.
Miller, a game after moving into fourth place in career steals, jumped into third place past Alexa Mennen with six for 285 steals.
With the victory, the Bulldogs improved to 9-0 overall, one of only 16 girls’ teams to maintain a perfect record.
Even though Valley wasn’t happy with the performance, she wasn’t going to complain.
“A win is a win,” Valley said, “and we’ll take it and get better.”
