CLEAR LAKE – No. 7 Hampton-Dumont’s football team had to play the perfect game if it wanted to defeat top-ranked Clear Lake.

The Bulldogs, however, had too many turnovers, costly penalties and gave up one too many big plays in a 20-7 Class 2A District 2 tilt that decided the title in a 20-7 loss to the Lions.

It left 21-year H-D head coach Jerry Shafrath short on words after it was all over.

“Big plays hurt us today,” Shafrath said. “We’ve got to get better.”
