New book sheds light on ‘Lost’ Franklin County towns

Did you know that Hampton used to be named Benjamin, or that Sheffield was once called Shobe’s Grove?

     Those interesting tidbits and many more can be found in a new book highlighting Franklin County’s past.

     “Lost Franklin & Grundy Counties” will hit the shelves soon following a year of research and writing. It’s the sixth book in author Linda McCann’s “Vanished Towns of the Cedar Valley” series, which features a treasure trove of information on small settlements and extinct villages throughout the area.

     “People think Iowa is boring, and I don’t agree,” said McCann. “We have interesting things that are happening, and have occurred, right in our own backyards.”
