Carma DeVries’ nearly lifelong dedication to 4-H earned her one of the state’s top honors for the organization.
Last week, DeVries was inducted into this year’s class of the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame at the Iowa State Fair. Established in 2002, the Hall of Fame honors those who have dedicated a large portion of their lives to 4-H.
DeVries fits that criteria perfectly. The current leader of the Franklin XL 4-H group, she was a nine year 4-H member as a student in Franklin County and then a project leader before becoming a group leader. Her first foray into volunteering with 4-H was teaching dog obedience while she was a 4-H member. DeVries was also the 4-H horse project leader, which stemmed from her love of showing horses as a member.
DeVries became the Franklin XL leader nine years ago when her son joined the group. Seeing the need for a leader, DeVries stepped up and filled the position.
