Livestock show ring goes out with a bang

With the sound of snapping timber and crumpling sheet metal came the end of an era for the Franklin County Fairgrounds.
“I showed livestock here in the 50s,” said Franklin County Fair Board’s Carol Lowery, as she watched over the demolition of the fairgrounds’ dated show arena. “The arena has been around for such a long time.”
The age of the decades-old show arena, located next to the grounds’ hog and cattle barn, remains a mystery to fair officials as they continue to research the building’s origin.
The building, at least 60 years old, was not scheduled to be demolished as a part of other fairground renovation projects.
