Liqui-Grow discharge worries Hampton council

Concerns about a recent water discharge at a local fertilizer plant consumed discussion Monday night during the Hampton City Council workshop.
     Bryan Heilskov, manager of Liqui-Grow, met with the group to discuss an incident that occurred Dec. 15 at the facility located in the Hampton Industrial Park. Due to heavy rainfall that week, a Liqui-Grow employee released ammonia-rich water from a secondary containment area, which flowed southward towards the city’s drinking water wells at the airport. Extensive cleanup efforts ensued, and the company implemented new policies to prevent future incidents.
     According to a report by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the threat to Hampton’s water supply is considered minimal.
