Letter to the Editor

Trust, trust trust

To the editor:

In 2006, while serving his first term as a freshman U.S. senator form Illinois, Barack Obama made the following remarks during a discussion in the U.S. Senate before the call for votes on raising the debt limit: ‘The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally.

Leadership means the ‘the buck stops here.” Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.’ “The cost of our debt is one of the fastest growing expenses in the Federal budget.” ”Every dollar we pay in interest is a dollar the is not going to investment in America’s priorities. Instead, interest payments are a significant tax on all Americans - a debt tax that Washington doesn’t want to talk about.” Now fast forward to October, 2013.

When addressing Republicans opposition to increasing the ceiling: “For example, one of the most important things Congress has to do in the next couple weeks is to raise what’s called the debt ceiling. And it’s important to understand what this is. This is a routine vote. Congress has taken this vote 45 times to raise the debt ceiling since Ronal Reagan took office. It does not cost taxpayers a single dime. I does not grow our deficits by a single dime. It does not authorize anybody to spend any new money whatsoever. All it does is authorize the Treasury to pay the bills on what Congress has already spent.”

If Congress had merely raised the debt ceiling just enough to pay its current obligations this might be true. However, as Obama points out, every one of these 45 times Congress raised the debt ceiling, they raise it again. In other words, the liberal faction of Congress continues to spend money the taxpayer does not have.

And then we have the deception of Obamacare by Mr. Obama: “If you like your plan, you can keep it.” “If you’re happy with what you’ve got. nobody’s changing it.” A variation of these quotes was said 23 times from 2008 to 2010. Furthermore, “How can we get the Federal government to take care of its citizens? I happen to be a proponent of single payer universal health care.” Mr. Obama has and continues to use a bait-and switch tactic on the American people, especially the younger preretirement generations. We have been sold a Trojan Horse by a Democrat majority of the 111th Congress.

It can be said that we are now experiencing “soft tyranny.”

Thomas Jefferson said “A wise and frugal Government, which shallrestrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them otherwisefree to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shallnot take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sumof good government...”
