Local writer clears up hospital mix-up

Letter to the Editor:

When I wrote a recent article concerning the building of the Lutheran Hospital, I stated that the hotel which was on the site of the proposed hospital had been purchased and destroyed.
I have since learned that instead, it was divided into three homes which are now located a block south of the local Hardee’s restaurant on the corner of First Avenue Southwest and Third Street Southwest. The house on the corner has a large glassed-in porch, the one to the south is mostly square (which I suspect was the middle piece,) and the other house is to the east.
They are much more than 100 years old and still being used which makes me very happy to know that nothing was really destroyed in bringing forth the new hospital at that time. I want to sincerely thank Delores Benning and Shirley Pitsor for clearing up this mystery.
Take a look for yourself and see if you could plan how they would go together. Those of us working on the history of the hospital weren’t alive in 1915 and many of those who could verify facts are gone, so we go by what has been written and recorded. It is good that people are willing to clarify facts before the book about the hospital is completed. We welcome your help.
