Former La Luz Hispana Director and Associate Director Sister Carmen Hernandez and Sister Maura McCarthy, respectively, as well as La Luz as a whole were recently recognized for their community involvement and service.
Hernandez at the Iowa Culture and Language Conference last month accepted the Dan Chavez Beyond the Horizon Organization Award, given to an organization that serves as an advocate for immigrant, refugee and non-English speaking people in Iowa.
Hampton-Dumont Elementary Principal Ellen Pickhinke nominated Hernandez, McCarthy and La Luz for the award. Pickhinke said she nominated La Luz for the award because of its importance in the community and involvement with the school district.
In her nomination letter, Pickhinke cites La Luz’s programming and services that touch on all aspects of life offered to residents.
