La Luz celebrates five years

The five year anniversary celebration of La Luz Hispana was an emotional day for Sr. Carmen Hernandez and Sr. Maura McCarthy, who will step down from their leadership roles at La Luz later this year.

“It was one of those moments where you’re pretty sure you’ve touched the lives and made a difference to the people of the city,” said Hernandez, who will begin her service as the President of the Sisters of Presentation of Dubuque on June 3.

“For me, it was a real affirmation that we have done some good here, that people have appreciated it and that it’ll continue here.”

Between 120 and 150 people visited La Luz last Tuesday for the open house to thank the staff for their efforts and celebrate successes.
