Heyde trial continued indefinitely last week

A jury trial involving the City of Hampton and local landlord Milton Heyde was postponed last Wednesday until further notice, according to documents filed in Franklin County District Court.

Heyde, the defendant, is refuting a July nuisance property citation issued to a duplex he owns at 120 and 120 1/2 1st Ave. NE. A jury trial was set for Oct. 28 to decide the matter, but was continued until further notice due to the content of two documents Heyde filed with the court. The documents contained a request to alter the jury pool and a letter detailing Heyde’s proposed defense, which he called “The Anti-Christ Defense.”

Heyde is representing himself in the case and believed the jury pool was prejudiced because it didn’t represent a fair cross-section of the community. In a court document filed on Oct. 15, Heyde requested at least 6-8 Hispanic men be added to the jury pool in addition to other demands.
