Harm DeGroot, 95

Harm DeGroot, 95, of Sheffield, Iowa, went home to be with the Lord on April 9, 2023. He was surrounded by his wife, family, and friends during his last days at the Sheffield Care Center.

The memorial service will be held on April 15, 2023, at First Grace Baptist Church, Sheffield, Iowa with visitation from 12:30 to 1:45 pm and the service at 2:00 pm followed by a “farmer’s lunch” after the service. Pastor Matthew Reeves will be officiating the service. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sietsema-Atkinson Funeral Home in Hampton. Harm DeGroot was born on August 15, 1927, in Canistota, South Dakota, to John (who recently
emigrated from Holland) and Jesse Dryer (who recently emigrated from Germany) DeGroot. Harm lived in Monroe, South Dakota, and Kamrar, Iowa, before moving to Sheffield, Iowa, to farm. He attended Kamrar and Sheffield Public Schools. Harm and Junice (Slattum) were married on August 22, 1952, in Joice, Iowa. Soon after their marriage, Harm served in the army during the Korean War. He was recognized for his long-range shooting accuracy on the training field. He was stationed in Korea, Japan, and Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Junice joined Harm during his service in Hawaii.

Harm loved helping people. He was generous, hard-working, and had a huge smile that warmed people’s hearts. We never got to have a retirement party for him because he never fully retired. He loved spending time helping on the farm, raising cattle as pets, and caring for a barn full of kittens. As Rick left the care center in the morning last week, Harm still asked, “What would you like me to do today.”

Harm is survived by his wife of 70 years, Junice, who resides at the Sheffield Care Center; his sister, Anne (Howard) Means, who resides in Oregon; sister-in-law Marlys Slattum of Chicago; three children, Nancy (Tom) Miller, Rick (Laurie) DeGroot, and Patti (Vern) Boersma; 10
grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Harm is preceded in death by John and Jessie DeGroot (parents), John DeGroot (infant brother), Johnny and Anne Slattum (father and mother-in-law) Calvin and Eileen Rasmussen (brother and sister-in-law) Duane and Helen Slattum (brother and sister-in-law), Arden Slattum (brother-in-law).

Memorials will be given to the Sheffield Care Center and missionaries Harm and Junice support: Youth for Christ, Campus Crusade, Navigators, and Campus Bible Fellowship.
