Hampton veteran recalls service as a P-51 fighter pilot

It’s been 70 years since Al Andersen last climbed into the cockpit of his P-51 Mustang, but he still holds vivid memories of the aircraft’s powerful engine and roaring machine guns.
     “I loved it right away,” he recalled. “I just couldn’t believe the maneuverability of the plane and the speed of it. It was so much faster than anything I had ever flown.”
     Andersen, 94, spent four months flying the famous fighter plane over Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia in 1945. Though some of his memories from World War II have faded, the Hampton man still recalls the thrill of battle and heartbreak of war like it was yesterday.
