A four-department investigation into an alleged assault last week revealed a Hampton teen was injured by a self-inflicted stab wound inside her home on Sept. 2.

Police and emergency personnel responded to a 911 call in the 900 block of First Avenue Southeast around 4:30 p.m. that afternoon. Upon entering the residence responders discovered the victim, Jessica Speake, and transported her to the hospital for additional medical treatment. The neighborhood surrounding the house was blocked off and secured so police officers could comb the area for any clues left by a potential assailant.

Neighbors were interviewed and asked if they witnessed any suspicious activity in the area around the time of the incident. Officers from the Hampton Police Department, Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol and Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations originally investigated the incident as a stabbing crime, but evidence ulitmately discovered Speake’s wounds were self-inflicted.
