Former Hampton resident Shirley (Whipple) Koenen was among 51 other Iowa State University alumni featured in the Spring 2014 edition of Visions Across America, the official magazine for the ISU Alumni Association. Editor Carole Gieseke and photographer Jim Heemstra collected stories from ISU graduates in all 50 states and Washington D.C. during a two-year journey between November 2011 and November 2013. Each story was unqiue, but all involved an ISU diploma in some way or another.

Koenen’s path to Iowa State was a long one. She grew up on a farm near Hampton and later earned her high school diploma here. She married Leonard Koenen, founder of Koenen Chiropractic, and raised four daughters in Hampton. She served two terms on the Hampton Board of Education in the 1980s and was also one of the original members of Faith Baptist Church.

Koenen served as a speech instructor and high school English teacher at Dows, the speech instructor at Hampton, and a counselor at CAL during her time in Franklin County.
