A local author’s memoir about growing up in northwest Iowa during the early Forties has gained a small statewide fanbase following its publication last fall.

Jack Leinen, Hampton, published “Swimming Naked” in 2013 after almost two years of research and writing. The book is loaded with humorous anecdotes from the time he spent living with his grandparents in Sibley between the ages of 9 and 12. That timeframe also coincided with World War II, so the book carries a bit of historic value as well, he said.

“It’s just kind of a whole memoir of a 12-year-old kid’s life,” he explained. “Living with my grandparents, going to church, pickin’ strawberries, Saturday nights in town and Halloween pranks. That kind of stuff.”
