Maria Jiminez Castro, associate professor of speech and language pathology at the University of Puerto Rico Medical Science Campus, couldn’t help but smile as she saw her students in action.
Last week, three audiology and three speech pathology students from the University of Puerto Rico visited Hampton as part of a weeklong tour in Iowa and Minnesota. Their stop in Hampton included a visit to La Luz Hispana, where students met with people who had concerns about hearing and speech issues and provided advice to aid those issues.
“This is one of the most important things, what they’re doing now,” Jiminez Castro said as her students assisted those who walked through the doors of La Luz. “Talking to the people, listening to their needs and the difficulties they face…that’s going to help them be more sensitive to people’s needs back home.”
The visit to Hampton was part of the North Iowa Educational Cultural-Exchange (NIECE) Project. Throughout the week, the students visited with and heard presentations from professionals, toured businesses and industries and participated in several other activities in Mason City, Clear Lake, Clarion and the surrounding areas. At the center of the project was the NIECE Conference and Banquet on Saturday in Clear Lake.
“This is an opportunity to supplement what they have already learned,” said Jeffrey Cokely, associate professor of audiology at the University of North Texas. “They have the opportunity to meet some of the top researches.”
