H-D superintendent discusses special needs “safe room”

A report detailing behavioral intervention tactics at an area elementary school raised eyebrows about the treatment of special education students last week, but one local superintendent says the practice is used in schools throughout the country, including Hampton-Dumont.

     A Dec. 11 report from WHO TV in Des Moines featured a secluded padded room used for special needs students at Rock Run Elementary in Iowa Falls. The station was tipped off about the room by an upset mother whose child was placed in the room without her knowledge following a bout of violent behavior. The parent was outraged by the so-called “Naughty Room,” and called for its immediate removal.
