Flashing blue lights on the exterior of Hampton-Dumont school buildings provides another line of safety for students in the event of a dangerous situation.
The blue lights serve as a resource for students who are outside of the building during an emergency situation. Joel Heuer, school liaison, said when students approaching the building see the blue lights flashing, they know they cannot enter and must go to a designated safe location.
Last Tuesday, the lights were turned on before school as a simulation to explain to students what to do if they see the flashing blue lights on at any time.
“If anyone is outside for practice or recess or anything, if that blue light is on, they aren’t going to be allowed in the building and need to get away as quickly as possible,” he said.
