H-D reports first bus violation days in-to new school year

It didn’t take long for last year’s problems with drivers ignoring school bus stop arms to resume.
On Monday, just three days into the 2018-19 school year, a Hampton-Dumont School District bus driver reported a stop arm violation on Highway 65 North. Transportation director Dan Schipper said the driver of the vehicle went through the stop arm at approximately 60 miles per hour.
Last year, bus drivers reported 50 stop arm violations. Violations occur both when drivers go through a stop sign from the front or pass around the bus. Some come to a complete stop before advancing through a stop. All three instances are illegal.
Schipper said problem areas include the in town route, which Schipper said could possibly be attributed unfamiliarity, as the route is relatively new – about two to three years. However, he said Highway 65 has also been a problem area, which is made even more hazardous by the high speeds of vehicles that have passed through the stop arms.
