Something special is cooking at Hampton-Dumont High School.

Last week, the culinary and management teams from H-D each took 3rd place at the State ProStart Competition in Des Moines. ProStart is a competition that challenges a team of students to perfect a three-course meal and another team to develop a restaurant plan. One of the smallest schools in the competition, H-D's teams beat out at least a dozen other schools to fin-ish in the top three - the only school to have both teams do so.

This is just the fourth year H-D has sent a team to the state competition, but the teams usually find themselves around the top five. However, with a wealth of experience back on both teams, this year proved to the most successful in history.

But before last Tuesday's competition, the teams had worked since the fall to per-fect their plan and ensure exe-cution was both as efficient and flawless as possible.

Coach Jane Hoegh, Fami-ly and Consumer Arts instruc-tor at H-D, said the lead-up required regular practice ses-sions, late nights and even some work by the students in their own homes after school. That dedication, she said, helped make the ProStart sea-son the success it was.
