It was a busy day at the Hampton-Dumont Middle School building on Saturday, January 20 as the H-D school district hosted their first large group district speech contest.
"I think it's going great," said H-D speech coach Emileigh Eilderts, who spent the day making sure that all the students, judges, and supporting family members got to the right place at the right time.
With more than 30 teams from a dozen schools across northeast Iowa participating, the building was packed as students performed speeches, songs, improv skits, and more. Though the day wasn't without its complications, by the end of the afternoon more than a hundred performances were judged and rated.
"Overall it went really well," said Eilderts. "We had some great volunteers. Our students really stepped up."
Unfortunately for Eilderts, hosting the contest left no time to see her own students perform.
