Tyler Stewart’s interest in politics and government he formed as a student at Hampton-Dumont has helped him earn an award that recognizes his civics teaching.
Stewart, a 2010 H-D grad, was recently named the Civil Rights/Civil Liberties Excellence in Teaching award recipient, which recognizes an Iowa social studies who inspires students to critically look at social issues and injustices.
Now an eighth grade American history and civics teacher at Berg Middle School in Newton, Stewart was recognized for the lessons taught in his civics class, which included an in depth look into how voting rights have been affected throughout the years.
“We drew that into today and how the Voter ID laws affect minorities,” he said. “That was very informative for them.”
Stewart added that he also challenges his students to exercise civic duties and actions, such as organize community-wide service projects.
