Hampton-Dumont-CAL’s ProStart culinary team didn’t return to Hampton with the first place National Invitational trophy but the team knows it wasn’t due to the lack of effort.
“For what we had planned, they were spot on,” said coach Jane Hoegh. “They felt like they gave it their all.”
The team competed in the national ProStart contest in Washington, D.C. last Thursday after earning their spot by winning the Iowa State ProStart Invitational earlier this year. They put their three-course dish against teams from all 49 other states, as well as some United States provinces. Hoegh said that despite the big stage and the fact it was the school’s first trip to the national competition, the team competed with poise and confidence.
“For me, it felt like we had done everything we could to prepare,” she said. “It was a stressful time and it shows they have the ability to compose themselves.”
The team competed on Thursday morning and Hoegh said the students approached the day business as usual. They were able to see Iowa’s ProStart management team compete and get a feel for the space in the culinary competition where they would be in just a matter of hours. After getting equipment and them-selves prepared, Hoegh said they were ready to go.
