H-D BOE discusses transportation options for open enrollees

The limits of Hampton-Dumont’s transportation abilities for open-enrollees into the district were a topic of discussion at the regular meeting of the Board of Education on Aug. 21; more specifically, how far and when H-D can travel into a neighboring district to pick up a student.
Rebecca and Scott Strother, current open enrollees into H-D, live between 180th and 190th streets, approximately 0.25 miles into the CAL school district. Their children have been open enrolling into the H-D school district for the last five years, and a former H-D transportation director, who said that their house is on the border of both districts, added their house as a stop at that time.
Superintendent Todd Lettow said that their stop is now an issue due to two families citing the Strothers as reason why a bus should pick up their children, seeing as the Strothers aren’t technically in the H-D district. This creates a problem because according to Iowa code, a school district can’t infringe on another school district unless an agreement is made between the two districts in question, meaning that H-D needs to either follow the rules or create an agreement with CAL.
