H-D adjusts spectator policy for athletic events

A new round of COVID-19 related suggestions and recommendations passed down by Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds last Monday have led to spectator restrictions at Hampton-Dumont-CAL High School events.

Per the Governor’s mandate, crowds at sporting events are limited to two spectators per athlete participating in the event.

Superintendent Todd Lettow said this means the gymnasium will have to be cleared after each event should more than one competition be scheduled on the same day. For example, a spectator at a junior varsity basketball game is not allowed to stay at the following varsity matchup, unless he or she is also one of the two spectators allowed for a varsity athlete.

Visiting athletes will also be allotted two spectators per athlete.

Spectators are expected to wear masks and socially distance at all home H-D-CAL events.

Lettow said that the restriction also allows spectators for just athletes. Cheerleaders, band members and team managers are not allotted spectators.

“You can have cheerleaders and pep band and managers running the books, but the only people that can have spectators are the athletes,” Lettow said. “It’s unfortunate because if you have a senior cheerleader, you can’t watch her cheer.”

Along with the state restrictions, Lettow said H-D has also elected to not offer concessions at home events and will not send cheerleaders to away contests.
