PARKERSBURG – Grundy Center turned a corner in early January.
After starting the year 2-8, the Spartans put together a string of five straight wins and finished out the month 5-3. As its confidence started to build, so did the team’s play and it all culminated in a winning record (11-10) heading into the Thursday, Feb. 21 Class 1A District 10 final against an 18-4 West Fork team at Aplington-Parkersburg High School.
That confidence never wavered, even though the Warhawks built an early lead.
That is when Grundy Center started hitting three-pointers (11 in all) and followed that up with some big points inside from 6-foot-4 Matthew Sternhagen off of the bench as the Spartans went on to upset West Fork 79-63 and advanced to the Sub-State 5 final.
