Gordon Dean Meyer, 79

Gordon Dean Meyer, 79, formerly of Latimer, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2023, at Sheffield Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, October 20, 2023, at Zion Reformed Church in rural Sheffield. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Thursday, October 19, 2023, at Zion Reformed Church in rural Sheffield. Burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield. Woodley Funeral Home is caring for Gordon and his family.

Gordon Dean Meyer was born March 15, 1944, at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa, son of Leonard and Martha (Olk) Meyer. He graduated from Franklin Consolidated School in 1962. Following graduation, Gordon worked several jobs. After serving in the Iowa National Guard, he began farming with his family until retirement.

On November 24, 1967, Gordon was united in marriage to Mavis Ann Smit at Zion Reformed Church in rural Sheffield. To this union, two sons were born: Chad and Kevin.

Gordon was a longtime member of Zion Reformed Church in rural Sheffield. He was very devoted to his relationship with Jesus and the church. He was happy to share his faith with others whenever possible. He served on the church consistory, taught Sunday school, catechism and led youth groups with his wife. He also served on the CAL Community School board, Latimer Golf Club board, FSA County Committee and Franklin REC board.

Gordon loved opportunities to spend time with his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed traveling with Mavis.

Gordon is survived by his son Chad (Maricia) Meyer of Floresville, Texas; son Kevin (Janet) Meyer of Clear Lake, Iowa; grandchildren Carson (Allison) Meyer, Grace Meyer, Grant Meyer and Cole Meyer; along with many in-laws, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mavis Meyer, brother, Daryl Meyer, and his parents, Leonard and Martha Meyer.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
