G.A.R. Memorial Hall restoration project receives award

     A 2013 renovation project at one historic Hampton landmark earned accolades from a statewide preservation group last month.

     G.A.R. Memorial Hall was awarded honorable mention recognition Aug. 21 in Preservation Iowa’s “Preservation At Its Best” competition. The contest awardsindividuals, organizations, projects and programs whose work demonstrates a commitment to excellence in historic preservation. Cedar Rapids’ City Hall building, which underwent extensive renovations following the 2008 floods, took top honors in the contest.

      The restoration project at G.A.R. Memorial Hall cost more than $70,000 and was spearheaded by the Hampton Historic Preservation Commission.
