Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight is hoping a surge in local support will send two Franklin County veterans on a trip to visit national war memorials in Washington D.C.

Ron Newsum, chairman of the Fort Dodge-based organization, said monetary donations are being sought for two local Korean War veterans scheduled to take an Honor Flight within the next year. Murrel Symens and Maynard Koenen, both of Hampton, were put on the Brushy Creek Area Honor Flight waiting list after submitting their applications for the trip. Symens could possibly go in September, while Koenen would probably take the flight in May 2015.

However, a few things need to happen first.

“We’ll take these veterans, but we expect the community to come through financially for them,” Newsum said. “These veterans fought for our freedoms and we expect each county to show support for them to go.”
