From the governor’s steer show to an accordion playing contest, Franklin County was well represented in multiple competitions and events at the 2015 Iowa State Fair.
Local participants gave it their all against the state’s best in events like the crop contest, music competition and cattle show. Plenty of people witnessed their accomplishments, as this year’s overall fair attendance of 1,117,398 broke the all-time record.
Franklin County even had its own celebrity at the fair on Aug. 18 when Coulter’s Dennis Carlson fulfilled his duties as Iowan of the Day. The award honors individuals who personify the greatness of Iowa with a strong work ethic, loyalty to helping others and an exceptional sense of community pride.
Carlson was selected based on his commitment to the CAL community and passion for teaching local youth about nature. He and his wife, Cathy, hold regular educational demonstrations for students at his Learning Tree Lodge, and he has also served as a Boy Scout leader, 4-H volunteer and in other capacities.
