With fair season right around the corner, 14 young women from local communities are preparing to face a panel of judges tasked with selecting this year’s Franklin County Fair Queen.
Lauren Trewin, 2018 Franklin County Fair Queen, will crown her successor from the court of candidates during the coronation ceremony on Thursday, July 18 at 5 p.m. in the Van Wall Tent. The 14 candidates include: Jennie Barkema, Meg Christiansen, Monica Freerks, Emily Gage, Maci Lohrbach, Jalissa Moore, Erin Plagge, Emersyn Priske-Rieck, Laela Ragsdale, Gloria Rodriguez, Erin Root, Shayla Schmitt, Alyssa Shirk and Hannah Winkowitsch.
The young women will be judged based on their personalities, their community involvement, leadership experience, poise, confidence, knowledge of local and widespread current events, and their ability to field questions quickly and accurately.
The girl crowned the 2019 Franklin County Fair Queen will go on to represent the fair itself throughout the next year, and will also compete in the Iowa State Fair Queen competition in August, where queens from all of Iowa’s fairs compete for the state crown.
