This year’s Franklin County Arts Council annual youth winter play puts a holiday spin on one of cinema’s most beloved stories.
This weekend, the FCAC presents “Christmas in the Land of Oz,” a “sequel” to the original “Wizard of Oz.” The story features the return of Dorothy and Toto to Oz where they meet with the Scarecrow, Tin Man and the Lion to find the Christmas spirit.
Director Russell Wood said this year, 28 children from second grade to seniors in high school will perform in the play. He said that the performance is unique and presents a different feel than the usual Christmas tales. With this story, Wood said, students are able to give their own twist to the character while taking inspiration from some of the most iconic cinematic characters in history.
“Instead of having the story that everyone is familiar with, the kids get to build the character the way they see that character and have that character experience things they didn’t in the original movie,” he said.
