Do’s-and-Don'ts for tree trimming

     With summer winding down, the Hampton Tree Board is working to get the city’s evergreens ready for winter. Volunteers wrapped protective fencing around the trees on Wednesday morning to discourage wandering deer from damaging the trees as they search for something to rub their antlers on.
     And while some make think that the cooler weather makes it a good time to do some trimming around Oak trees, the tree board members strongly discourage trimming branches until October when the leaves are gone.
     Trimming trees too soon puts strain on them as they’re working to store nutrients for the winter and open wounds can result in potentially fatal fungal infections.
     “Weed eaters and cutting too early are big no-no’s,” said Rick Rieken. “If possible, do it when they’re dormant.”
