A couple days of camp (literally) flew by for a group of area students.
Last week, Iowa State University Extension Franklin County hosted a three-day drone camp for sixth, seventh and eighth-graders. At the camp, students learned all about drones - how they fly, how to use maps and coordinates, what careers can be had through drone technology, FAA rules and how to operate the drones. The camp also touched on the science of flight and navigation.
Kim Booth, Youth Program Coordinator with Extension, said that while the offered several fun activities, including a drone flight to wrap up the camp, it introduced students to a field that will have many job opportunities in the future.
“The career is going to expand for all different businesses that use drones," she said. “This is important for the kids because they’ve grown up with technology and it helps bring science and math together.”
Kapil Arora, Extension agricultural engineer for the region, said drones have several applications in today’s business climate. Construction crews, military, property inspectors, search and rescue and delivery services, to name a few, can all utilize drones in some way. Arora said that the earlier students are exposed to drone technology, the more they’ll learn about potential careers.
